Ingredients:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
- 1/4 cup finely chopped parsley
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 cups beef broth
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Chopped fresh parsley for garnish optional
Instructions:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, chopped parsley, egg, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Mix until well combined
Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into oval or round hamburger steak patties
Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat
Add the hamburger steak patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until they are browned and cooked through
Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside
In the same skillet, add the thinly sliced onions and cook over medium heat until they become soft and caramelized, about 10 minutes
Sprinkle the flour over the caramelized onions and stir to combine
Cook for an additional 2 minutes, or until the flour is lightly browned
Gradually pour in the beef broth while stirring constantly to prevent lumps
Add Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, salt, and pepper
Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens, about 5-7 minutes
Return the hamburger steak patties to the skillet, spooning some of the onion gravy over them
Simmer for an additional 5 minutes, or until the patties are heated through
Serve the hamburger steaks with onion gravy hot, garnished with chopped fresh parsley if desired
